When you do not know how to pray.
Most people do not stop praying because they stopped believing. They stop because they freeze — they are not sure what to say, whether they are doing it right, or whether anyone is on the other end. None of that disqualifies you.
The shortest possible start
Say one true sentence out loud. "God, I do not know how to do this." "God, I am scared about Thursday." "God, I am angry and I do not want to be here." That is prayer. It is not a warm-up for prayer; it is the thing itself. Everything below is only scaffolding for people who want more structure, and structure is optional.
Four frameworks, if you want a shape
PRAY
Praise — say something true about who God is. Repent — name what you already know. Ask — be specific and ordinary. Yes — end by agreeing with a promise from Scripture rather than with your feelings.
ACTS
Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication. The oldest and most common shape. Useful because it puts asking last, after your perspective has already moved.
SOAP
Scripture — write a verse out. Observe — what does it actually say? Apply — what does it mean for today? Pray — turn all of it into a sentence to God. Best when you want prayer and Bible reading to stop being two separate chores.
Praying Scripture back
Take a verse and say it back to God as a request, inserting the names you are carrying. "Lord, guard Marcos’s heart and mind in Christ Jesus." This is the oldest solution to not knowing what to say, and it works.
Why write it down
Written prayer does three things speaking cannot. It slows you down enough to be honest. It stops you praying the same vague thing for a year without noticing. And it creates a record, so that when you are discouraged you can read what you asked in March and what happened by August. Nothing rebuilds a tired prayer life faster than your own handwriting.
How do I know it is God and not just me?
This is the most common honest question and it deserves a plain answer, not a mystical one. Christians have historically tested a sense of leading four ways, and they work together, not alone.
Scripture
God does not lead against His own word. If an impression contradicts Scripture, it is not Him — no matter how strong it felt.
The character of Jesus
Ask whether what you are sensing sounds like the person you meet in the Gospels: honest, patient, unimpressed by status, gentle with the wrecked, hard on pride.
Conviction, not condemnation
His conviction is specific, points toward repair, and leaves a door open. Condemnation is global, vague, and slams it. The tone tells you the source.
Trusted community
Say it out loud to one or two mature Christians who are free to disagree with you. Guidance that cannot survive being spoken to a wise friend is usually not guidance.
